SMALL DETAILS. USEFUL CHECKS.

File size calculator

Compare bytes, decimal MB and binary MiB without mixing units. Choose a local file or enter a known size.

01 / YOUR DETAILS

A little clarity starts here.

Enter your details, then run the check.

How this works

Decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000; binary prefixes use powers of 1,024. The file’s byte count is read locally without reading its contents. Values above the safe integer range are rejected.

Scope, attribution and licensing

NIST binary prefixes; calculations and text adapted by HandInCheck, 2026-10-04. NIST does not endorse this tool. NIST non-SRD data terms; no copied dataset or prose, constants independently encoded

Worked example

NIST defines 1 MiB as 1,048,576 bytes. This equals 1.048576 MB. A 5 MB limit is 5,000,000 bytes, not 5 MiB.

Limitations

The receiving platform may label its limit ambiguously. Confirm its definition. This calculator does not compress, upload or validate file contents.
